Crossing gender boundaries and making alternative choices against the grain of social norms is not easy. Women and girls, men and boys who have begun to challenge gender norms and relations through their words and actions often face backlash and rejection among peers and others within the community.
Before mobilizing on the ground, it is important to consider what are the tensions, threats and risks that may affect a person's participation with programming. This should be accompanied by the development of a referral list of support resources to mitigate and respond to threats and violence.
